Water Treatment Sensor

Dan and John were contracted on an 18-month intensive product development of a cutting-edge industrial sensor for use in water treatment by a local startup who required complete program oversight.

Services provided included:

  • proof of concept design and testing
  • project scope definition
  • embedded electronics development
  • component sourcing
  • management of software development team
  • management of  and design guidance of depth-rated injection mold casing
  • initial marketing research and production of marketing materials
  • development of company brand-identity
  • field testing
  • Customer product support
  • IP protection strategy and patent writing

The sensor required the design of numerous electronic systems and sub-systems including multi-megapixel CMOS imaging sensor and accompanying high-efficiency LED lighting.   On board ethernet and additional busses allow for plant integration and communication though MODBUS, analog signals, and HTML in wireless and hardwired configurations.  Additional pump and motor drivers were also integrated.  The system is designed to be user expandable with additional daughter-boards making this electronics package a platform for future products.   Compact form factor, low power usage, high stability, and multiyear 100% duty cycle were critical to success.

By developing unique algorithms and processes on top of a unique blend of open-source machine vision and scientific data analysis software Dan and John to saved the program substantial time and money.  Developing this cutting-edge electronics package presented numerous manufacturing challenges, which required management and leveraging of support from component developers, suppliers, and manufacturers.
